Electronics giant Sony has released more details about plans for two new 3D cameras. The Sony DSC-TX9 and the Sony DSC-WX5 are point-and-shoot cameras that capture 3D images with a single lens. We previously reported that Sony were working on 3D cameras for consumers and now have more details.
The 3D photographs can be transferred to compatible 3D televisions using 3D glasses. In order to take the 3D images all the user has to do is to click and sweep the camera across a scene for 3D panorama.
The cameras are Sony’s response to the Fujifilm’s Real 3D W1. The Fujifilm camera has a duel lens while Sony’s camera is lighter as it only has a single lens. Sony’s new cameras simulate two lenses by interpreting the shots taken during a panoramic sweep as if it were the left and a right lens on one 3D camera.
The two cameras will be available from September 2010. The DSC-TX9 will come in dark grey and red and retail at around $429. The DSC-WX5 will be available in silver, black, and violet and will cost $329.
Sony are keen to roll out their range of 3D technology as there have been a number of claims about how successful 3D television is likely to become. One expert recently claimed that over 20 million homes will own a 3D TV set in in the next five years.

[...] Electronics giant Sony has registered patents for split screen 3D televisions that would allow viewers to watch two different types of 3D content simultaneously. The innovative idea is just the latest of a number of 3D technological developments Sony plans to introduce. A spokesperson for the firm said that the technology will mean more than one viewer can watch a 3D television screen and see completely different pictures. “An image from a first video signal corresponding to a left perspective of a scene and an image from a second video signal corresponding to a right perspective of the scene are alternately displayed with the display,” it was commented. Viewers will be able to watch different channels on the same television by wearing individual shutter glasses and using individual headphones. Sony have already shown their technological innovations with the release of the world’s smallest 3D digital camera. [...]
